A Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County entomologist has decided to call a new species of fly after Arnold Schwarzenegger. Once he saw the bulging little legs of the insect that he discovered in the Brazilian Amazon, the name came to him instantly. The technical name of this fly is Megapropodiphora Arnoldi.
Besides resembling the Hollywood Icon, the fly is known from only one female specimen that was almost overlooked due to it being so small. In fact, the founder has stated that this is the world’s smallest fly, measuring in at a miniscule 0.395mm. This has overtaken the other species of fly that he previously discovered, measuring 0.4mm.
The fly has not been observed in the wild, but it has been stated that this fly is a parasitoid, based on it pointed and sharp ovipositor. The fly has probably originated from termites or ants. In 2016, the entomologist and his team discovered twelve new species of scuttle fly, after ‘field trips’ in the backyards of houses around the city of angels.
